Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education that is dedicated to scholarship and excellence in education. The Alpha Gamma Delta Chapter at Mary Baldwin College encourages members to take active roles in promoting worthy educational ideas and practices. The Mary Baldwin College chapter of Sigma Beta Delta was chartered in 2009 to encourage and recognize scholarship and achievement among students of business, management, administration, and marketing communication. The international honor society, established in 1994, encourages and promotes personal and professional improvement, and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind. Invitation for membership in Sigma Beta Delta is the highest national recognition a business student can receive at a college or university with a chapter. To be eligible for membership, a business student must rank in the upper 20 percent of the junior or senior class, maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA, and be invited to membership by the faculty officers. Mary Baldwin College students attended the Active Citizens Conference at The College of William and Mary on February 15-16, 2013, and received the Democracy Cup from the Campus Election Engagement Project for Mary Baldwin's participation in the Live Election Broadcast in November. The award includes a cash prize to help finance college coverage of this fall's gubernatorial election. The conference focused on educating, unifying, and inspiring college students who are active in their communities. To qualify for the Democracy Cup, students were asked to submit applications and three-minute videos about their election experience. The judges then looked at how students engaged their peers in the election process. On November 6, 2012, MBC students participated in an election night simulation by gathering results and broadcasting them from a newsroom to an audience. The Live Election event was the result of months of organizing and hard work by several communication and political science students. Four other colleges in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including Mary Baldwin, were awarded certificates. More than 200 students from Virginia colleges and universities attended the conference. Students attended several workshops that covered topics such as cultural sensitivity, how to start a nonprofit, and ways to improve next year's election process. Four students from Mary Baldwin College will participate in The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) 13th annual statewide collegiate Wells Fargo Ethics Bowl on February 12-13, 2012, on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. The Mary Baldwin College team will compete head-to-head against other highly qualified student teams from Virginia's 14 leading independent colleges and universities, debating a variety of case studies highlighting campus-based dilemmas.
